The Device on its own is Not enough
IT IS ABOUT THE QUALITY OF TEACHING AT SCHOOL
IT IS ABOUT HOW THE WHĀNAU SUPPORTS THIS LEARNING AT HOME AND KEEPS THE WHOLE FAMILY SAFE ONLINE.
When we first started enabling whānau to purchase devices for their children (in 2014) we were fortunate to have the support of Victoria University to do some research alongside our project. We gathered information about reading and writing of learners across the schools who joined the kaupapa of BYOD and compared results. Writing results for those learners who had devices and who had teachers who understood how to teach writing well improved their writing skills substantially.
Annual Reports
This is the third Annual Report of Te Mana o Kupe Trust, an education focused trust that was established in early 2014 in response to a desire from the Porirua learning community to invest in the digital education of children and their families in Porirua East. This report relates to the period from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017.
Te Mana o Kupe Trust works with Rangatahi of Porirua, their whānau and teachers to empower and equip communities for the future, by making digital technology accessible and affordable.

In addition we were keen to find out whether whānau engagement in learning improved through ownership of a device.
Here are two papers from that time:
